You may have seen our most recent you tube video, where wemet and recorded a conversation between Mark, Luke Staton and I.
We spoke a lot about addiction but also about our old livesversus our new ones.
One of the things that stands out is how we spend our time or more specifically who we spend our time with. We try to surround ourselveswith positive, likeminded people who add value to our lives and who either have a positive influence on us or we can have one on them.
That very video is a good example of this in action…
We met Luke at an event for young people, we were invited because we did some work for the organisation earlier in the year and we got the opportunity to do the work as we met up with Chris Reddy from Bright ways coaching and he introduced us to them. All from spending time with a positive person who thinks like us!!
For me personally I have changed a lot of the people I spend my time with. I had to think firstly about keeping myself safe, but secondly about who and where I want to be – this led me to spend less time with some people and be open minded with regards new people who may cross my path.
You might not think of hip hop artists as particularly credible sources for quotes but I like this one;
“If you look at the people in your circle and don’t get inspired, then you don’t have a circle. You have a cage.” Nipsey Hustle
It can be daunting to look at your existing network in this way, but I am not sat here suggesting you have to forget you ever had a friendship with someone. But if that person is adding more bad then good, perhaps you can look at whether you can change the situation or help them, and if not, how much time that person is given.
With regards new people, be open minded, have conversations with people who look or sound different, go outside your comfort zone and be brave!
Back to our meeting with Luke, he’s an amazing guy, very positive and passionate about helping others (particularly young people). So he ticks every box for me!
